In its tenth year, Earth Hour went ahead as planned with people from around the world converging together in helping to bring awareness about the effects of climate change by turning off the lights.
From business to households, communities around our beautiful planet engage and join in on this annual event which was started by the World Wide Fund for Nature.
While turning off non-essential lights for a period of one hour isn’t enough to save our planet from the affects of climate change, it is this simple act which is meant to encourage us to step back and take a look at the state of our environment.
And this alone is important for us to consider if we want to continue enjoying the many benefits and conveniences we enjoy.
There are more automotive manufacturers trying to do their part by developing EVs, which produce zero emissions because of the increasing concern about the health of our planet. Startups are inventing new products to help clean our oceans and more people are turning to alternative modes of transportation.
Earth Hour 2017 saw cities with famous landmarks and monuments from around the world such as the U.N headquarters in New York, Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower, Sydney’s famous Opera House and others dimming their lights as a symbol of unity for this event.
It is evident that climate change is producing undesirable worldwide consequences we simply can not ignore. From rising global temperatures which is causing widespread melting of the Artic Sea ice to extreme weather patterns that sometimes claim the lives of people in various parts of the world.
Whether you believe in climate change or not, one thing is clear and it is that we are the cause that is negatively directly impacting the health of the Earth.
Earth Hour 2015
From the Eiffel Tower to Sydney’s Harbour Bridge the environmentally friendly movement saw lights being turned off for an hour.
Originally launched in 2007 in Australia, the event has grown to include 162 countries, which saw more than a third of Canadians participating last year.
Organized by the WWF, Earth Hour represents just one of the steps we can do to improve our environment. By reducing the amount of plastic bags in use, cutting down on our carbon footprint, there are many other things global citizens can do to improve the quality of mother Earth now.
The Peaceful Solution Incorporated is another group which has a mission to improve the quality of life for everyone on our planet by showing respect to the environment through maintaining a positive moral character .
Earth Hour 2016, is already scheduled to begin next March 19th at the same time as this year’s event. Instead of shutting off the lights only once a year, we all owe it to ourselves to take care of our environment and do our part of maintaining a clean and safe place for all animal and human life today.
