VR and AR Technology is gaining a lot of momentum in the tech industry, and it is assumed to be the next big thing after smartphones. The selling feature of this technology is its ability to take us between the virtual and the real world to a whole new level of interactivity.

Considerable efforts are being put out by tech companies to make VR headsets more self-reliant as standalone devices. Samsung, who is an early player in the field of VR has been pushing its developmental pursuits in the technology.

Earlier this year, Samsung’s C-Lab division that experiments with futuristic projects announced four possible VR projects. The same division announces yet another project named Samsung FaceSense that aims at replacing the hand-held controllers in your VR headsets.

Samsung says that this project aims at utilizing a user’s facial expression and then converting the biometric signals which can be further used to perform VR Navigation just like existing controllers.

Samsung in its recent blog-post writes:

“Whenever we speak, change our expression or shift our gaze, our faces generate electric signals.

“FaceSense recognizes and translates these biometric signals into input for navigation, allowing users to maneuver through VR worlds with intuitive movements and simple voice commands, rather than reaching for out-of-sight physical controls.”

At the recently held VRLA conference earlier this month, Samsung has shown an early version of a working prototype wherein the system responds to facial expressions while recognizing a few voice commands.

Samsung says that progress has grown in this direction and this new concept could set the basis for a faster and intuitive interaction with the VR world.
