From the outside, the Lovebox looks just like a simple wooden box. Sure, it’s cute and all, but what would you use it for? – You can’t help but ask that question when you first see this solid piece of beechwood.

The answer, unsurprisingly, lies on the inside.

With an aptly chosen moniker, the Lovebox is designed and developed by Jean, a France-based engineer, with support from Marie, a serial entrepreneur. The Lovebox is a unique blend of artistry and technology that allows you to express your true feelings for a loved one when you’re away.

While calling it the future of texting would be an exaggeration, Jean and Marie’s creation is definitely an upgrade for anyone who wouldn’t mind spending a few bucks to turn their text messages into warm, sincere, and heartfelt notes.

How does the Lovebox function?

The Lovebox has a fairly simple modus operandi for a device that aims to revolutionize the way we send and receive text messages. It has a built-in display inside the box and a mirror on the underside of the lid. The box connects to the web via Wi-Fi.

The sender uses a free app to send a short text with max (168 characters), drawing, or gif. The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms. When a new text message arrives, the recipient is not notified with your typical smartphone ping. Instead, the physical heart on the box starts fluttering. It keeps on fluttering until you open the box to read the message. With a simple push, you can send back a shower of cute hearts to the sender’s screen.

An early version of the Lovebox was released in France last Christmas which saw as many as 1,000 units sold within three months.

This is, however, only the initial build. The company recently started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for adding more features to the Lovebox. The goal was to raise $58,658 which was achieved in just a few hours. Overnight, the Kickstarter campaign raised 227% of the financial target.

“We are always amazed by the positive feedback and creative ways our users find to use it. We regularly hear about how being pleasantly surprised by a spinning heart made their day,” Marie, co-founder of Lovebox, said in a statement.

The story behind the innovation of the Lovebox is cute too.

Jean, who conceptualized the idea and helped it materialize, elaborated: “It started as I was leaving France to do research at MIT. I was looking for a way to preserve the magic bond of affection during the months of separation from my Fiancée. That’s how Lovebox was born, to make every small bit of attention count. To make people feel loved every day using modern technology in a clever way.”

Early bird supporters who contribute to the Kickstarter campaign will get a +50% discount on the product, expected to retail at $119. Shipping is slated to begin sometime between October 31 and December 15.
